Once upon a time,
the planning of the greatest seaborne invasion ever took place.
Four years in the preparation, Operation Overlord, the Allied invasion of Normandy on 6 June 1944, marked the beginning of the end of World War II and the eventual liberation of Europe.

THE DISCOVERING D-DAY PROJECT

‘Discovering D-Day’ is an innovative and exciting project for young people aged 8–18.  The project uses mobile phone technology to encourage young people to explore and interpret the D-Day Museum’s collections in their own way.

HOW DOES THE MOBILE PHONE TECHNOLOGY WORK?

On arrival at the museum the young people are each supplied with a specifically adapted mobile phone. They can learn more about museum objects that are on display by typing in codes assigned to each object.  The phone is programmed for easy use, and the young people can then visit the museum, selecting and saving objects with their handset, taking photos, and recording audio and text comments.  This information is then automatically sent back to a personal online gallery that the young people can access back at home or school where they can then revisit, edit, share and publish their galleries.

WHO CAN TAKE PART IN THE PROJECT?

Schools and any youth group working with young people aged 8 – 18 can take part in the project.  For further information, please click on the relevant link below. For more information about the project, please contact Katherine Webber, ‘Discovering D-Day’ Project Officer, telephone 023 9282 7261 or email katherine.webber@portsmouthcc.gov.uk.
