The Overlord Embroidery       Caen is not taken on D-Day and its capture is essential for the development of the campaign. Dusk on 7 July 1944 sees the city attacked by Halifax and Lancaster bombers. Early next morning, accompanied by mass artillery air and naval gunfire support, the Allies launch a successful offensive, Operation Charnwood.
